Home renovations to this compact single-storey home focused on modernising the internal planning, creating a better connection from the living area to the northern back garden, along with new additions to suit the spatial needs of the client.
The existing northern facing rooms of the home included a bathroom and storeroom. These were relocated to make space for the dining room which could then open out onto the covered patio and back garden. Internally, walls were removed to open up the living area, creating an L-shaped configuration of living room, kitchen and dining room. Large glazed folding-stacking doors were added off the dining room allowing much needed natural light to filter through to the living room. The entrance to the home was relocated to align with the added double garage. This freed up the existing large entrance hall which was redesigned as a 3rd bedroom.
The scullery and pantry areas were removed from within the kitchen into a dedicated new extension. This further aided the new open-plan internal living area arrangement and the incorporation of the kitchen into it. En-suite bathrooms were added to the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms. A new main bathroom and dressing room were added off the existing main bedroom. Partial demolition and re-configuration of the existing footprint of the house was utilized as much as possible to minimise the total area of new additions and help reduce construction costs. Small courtyards were incorporated off the 3 bedrooms, thus allowing larger windows to be added for natural light and ventilation, without affecting the privacy of the rooms.
From a services perspective the home renovations incorporated a solar panel installation for supplementary power, a gas reticulation system for cooking and heat pumps for water heating. This all provides a sizable utility saving, while affording the client the comfort of a level of self-sufficiency in their newly rejuvenated home.
